The process of submitting your Web site URL to a search engine or search directory with the intent of getting it listed on the search site is known as Search Engine Submission. It is a generic term used to either describe the method of registering your web site with the search engines.
Does your web site generate enough traffic? Is your web site profitable? Since 80% of the internet traffic is generated from search engines, over 50% of consumers use search engines to search for product or service online. If your web site is not listed in the top 30 positions of each major search engine, it is unlikely that customer will find you.
Benefit of Search Engine Submission
Get your web site list on all search engines
Help to achieve top search engine rankings
Increase your online sales
Reach more customers
Taking over the competitions
Drive targeted and qualified visitors to your web site
Expand to new markets
Getting listed does not mean that you will necessarily rank well for particular terms, however. It simply means that the search engine knows your pages exist.Think of it like a lottery. Search engine submission is akin to you purchasing a lottery ticket. Having a ticket doesn’t mean that you will win, but you must have a ticket to have any chance at all.
Directories are search engines powered by human beings. Human editors compile all the listings that directories have. Getting listed with the web’s key directories is very important, because their listings are seen by many people. In addition, if you are listed with them, then crawler-based search engines are more likely to find your site and add it to their listings for free.
Submitting a Website
You should prepare before submitting to any directory. This preparation means that you have written a 25 word or less description of your entire web site. That description should make use of the two or three key terms that you hope to be found for.If you have time, you should consider researching what are the best terms for your site, rather than guessing at these. The What People Search For page has a list of resources that will allow you to do such research. It is essential that the description you write not make use of marketing language. So, if you sold shoes and wanted to be found for terms such as “athletic shoes” and “running shoes,” you might write a “just the facts” description like this:
Purchase athletic shoes, running shoes, hiking boots and other footwear plus try our cross country trail finder
Before submitting your site to any directories, you should be satisfied that the TITLE and DESCRIPTION of your home page reflect your most important search terms and that they convey the right impression of your site. This should be the text that is submitted (if you’ve already submitted a different description to Yahoo, it is very unlikely that you will be able to persuade them to change your listing). If you have any sort of budget for web marketing, paying for an entry in Yahoo (and possibly LookSmart) is likely to be good value for money. For advise on how to submit to Yahoo, first read the Yahoo guidelines, then check out How to Get Listed in Yahoo!. LookSmart also encourages submission of more than one page per site, which you may wish to consider if you are offering several different services on one site.
You should also add an entry to dmoz, the Open Directory Project. Dmoz is now used by several search services, including AltaVista, Hotbot, Lycos and Google, and it’s free. Re-submit your site if it doesn’t appear on dmoz within a month.ou should submit your home page and site map page to the major search engines. This should include, as a minimum: AltaVista, Excite, Fast, Google, HotBot, Lycos, and Northern Light. In addition to submission, you should also create a link to your new site from a page on an existing site that is already indexed. In many cases, this will be a more effective method of getting a site indexed than submission.
The value of submitting multiple pages and of using automated submission services is limited. This is becasue a very high percentage of submitted pages received by search engines come from automated services. As a result, the engines are developing strategies for preventing automated submissions and are also becoming less reliant on submissions, in general; links from existing pages are of increasing importantance. So, use automated submission services with care and even if you submit manually don’t expect amazing results.
